“Less is More!”
Two years ago, my mum who was then 83 years old was diagnosed with early stage mucinous breast cancer. A breast surgeon offered her the traditional treatment protocol consisting of lumpectomy followed by radiotherapy. The shock of this diagnosis and the prospect of surgery and radiotherapy was too much for my mum to bear. While she wanted treatment, she also feared that her heart could not take another general anaesthesia. We were in a dilemma. I sought Dr. Ong’s advice and enquired if there were other alternatives for my mum. Dr. Ong shared with us some recent research findings that pointed to using alternative treatment approaches for the elderly. It was exactly what we were looking for. It gave us hope! Dr. Ong offered my mum the option of wide local excision under local anaesthesia and carefully explained its merits in the light of my mum’s age, type of cancer, the trade-offs and proposed ways of managing residual risks etc. The whole family including my mum unanimously agreed that it was the best approach for her. The day surgery took less than ½ hour and my mum experienced no pain just some bruising. She has been on Tamoxifen since with no side effects and she is so happy.
We are very thankful to Dr. Ong for offering this option to us. My mum is full of praise for Dr. Ong. “He is an excellent doctor who has the interest of the patient at heart. He really cares for his patient!” Thank you so much, Dr. Ong!
